Oh hail no!

The presence of one or more of these signs may indicate a situation where hail damage has been done and can help you determine whether you need a full roof replacement or roof repair.

Signs of Storm Damage on your Roof

One of the first things any homeowner should do after a storm is check for roof damage. Even if you have no visible water inside your home, roof damage is still a possibility.

While it might be tempting to climb up on the roof, we recommend homeowners avoid this whenever possible. Always try to assess roof damage from ground level if you can. Try using a pair of binoculars to see more clearly before making the decision to use a ladder.

On its own, rain is not usually enough to damage a structurally sound roof. Add wind, flying debris, and hail to the mix, however, and roofs may take a serious pounding.

Sometimes, roof damage is obvious to the eye. Still, you should take your time and look closely when assessing your situation. Some symptoms can be surprisingly hard to spot.

Dented gutters, gutter screens, or downspouts

If a roof has significant hail damage up top, the gutters will more than likely also have some impact damage. Surefire signs include dents to the gutters, gutter screens or downspouts.

Cracks

Cracks in roof shingles can happen whether there’s hail damage or not, but they’re still an indicator that the roof is in need of maintenance. (You may have to run your hands over the roof to determine if there’s cracking.)

Exposed Roofing

If you have asphalt roofing, there may be missing pieces along your roof. Sometimes you’ll be able to see the underlying matter where the asphalt granules were knocked off, other times the roof might have shiny spots that need to be addressed.

Bruising

Bruising is a lot like denting or pockmarks, but even smaller. Feel along the surface for dimples to see how your roof is reacting to hail. You may not need to do anything if the bruising is small enough, but it can predict the chances of future wear and tear. If the dimples have any kind of give when you press on them, your shingles may be starting to decay.

Bubbles

If your roof shows uneven bubbles throughout, you may have hail damage. Roof repairs need to be taken care of immediately for the best possible protection during a storm. For even better preparation, trim any branches that may whip against your home or roof during a storm.
